Why ADAS Recalibration Matters After Windshield Replacement

On many vehicles, the windshield is also the mounting surface for a camera that helps driver-assistance systems interpret the road.

Why the procedure can apply

Lane-support, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise features may use a forward-facing camera mounted at the top of the windshield. Replacing the windshield can change that camera's mounting reference even when the new glass fits correctly. Whether recalibration is required depends on the vehicle maker's procedure, the installed windshield and camera system, and the work performed.

Static and dynamic procedures

When recalibration is specified, some vehicles use targets placed at measured distances while the vehicle remains stationary. Others require a controlled drive under defined road and speed conditions. Some procedures combine both methods. The procedure for the specific vehicle determines the method.

Plan for it before installation

The VIN and clear photos of the camera or sensor housing help identify the right glass and the applicable vehicle procedure before the appointment. Carolina Auto Glass confirms that scope for the specific vehicle rather than assuming every windshield replacement requires recalibration.
