What the camera is doing up there

On most vehicles built in the last decade, the black housing behind your rear-view mirror holds a camera that looks straight down the road. Lane keep assist reads lane markings through it. Adaptive cruise uses it to judge the car ahead. Automatic emergency braking depends on it to decide something is about to be hit. All of that assumes the camera is pointed exactly where the manufacturer put it.

Why replacing the glass changes that

The camera mounts to the windshield. A new windshield means a new mounting surface, set at a fractionally different angle and thickness. A degree of aim at the mirror is a lot of feet of error a hundred yards down I-26. Recalibration re-teaches the system where straight ahead is.

Static and dynamic

Some vehicles calibrate statically: the car is squared up to a printed target at a measured distance on level ground while a scan tool walks the system through the procedure. Others calibrate dynamically, driving at a steady speed on well-marked road while the system relearns — the stretches of I-26 and Highway 17A around Summerville work well for that, provided the weather cooperates. Some vehicles need both.

Does your vehicle need it?

Not every vehicle does. Plenty of trucks and older sedans in the Lowcountry have no windshield-mounted camera at all, and recalibration simply doesn't apply. We check your VIN and build before quoting so the answer is settled up front — and if it's not needed, you don't pay for it.

Signs something is off afterward

A warning light for lane keep or collision avoidance, cruise that won't engage, or a system that nudges the wheel when the lane is clear — call us. Those symptoms are worth checking rather than living with, because they're the systems that matter most on the day you need them.
